I have the candida diet book, and I've seen all the restrictions. That's why I said that my heart goes out to you. The one good thing about the diet (aside from ridding yourself of the candida) is the fact that the diet eventually comes to an end!!! :) I can't begin to tell you how much I admire you for going on the diet. I know it isn't easy.

Good luck! :)

Perhaps some kind of heart problem, if it started in the left chest area. Yeah I think that would require some immediate medical attention.

When you eventually sell the property, it may sell for a slight discount because it's near the prison. However, you purchased the property at a slight discount because it is near the prison. In the end, it's a wash.

hi laura:

i too can relate to your pain, i have posted my journey.... my name is marcela. I am going to a rheumatalogist and he gave me a six pack of steroid to bring the inflamation down. it did and sort of helped temporaily. he also gave me naxporcin in topical cream form called Voltaren Gel 1%, trust me this really helps. I can visibly see the swelling come down. One thing that is for sure with me is when i lay down and ribs fall back i do have pain turning from side to side. How about you? hope this information will help. I will keep you in my prayers laura for some answers to our illness.

ExACTLY, the symptoms come on without warning.. and it makes me lose my mind. I feel like I am in my own personal prison too. MY doctor gave me some muscle relaxers and naproxen (aleve) Muscle relaxers work so so ... and acupuncture does work for me. It is getting costly though. It works to the point where it lessens the pain down to a 3 instead of a 10 when you have an attack. My pain does not radiate anywhere but in my chest. I have had my heart checked and it all came back normal. HOw is physical therapy going? What do they make you do? I can't afford that.... but it would be nice to know if it is something I can do too. I am sorry you have this pain. I am sorry any of us on here have this pain. I felt alone until now... I am glad you are here to talk to.. ugghhh...

Hello Marcela, my name is Kristie I am 35 years old and I too suffer from this horrid pain in the sternum. It comes on randomly (just about daily) and for me it feels anywhere from a shock (like an electrical shock) to feeling like when you move your neck to fast and pull a muscle, but it is in my chest. Pain does not radiate to my arms or neck, it just pulls and burns in my chest. I had a stress echo done on my heart and everything was fine. I had my esophogus checked and it was fine. I have been to 2 different doctors and they have both looked at me like I am crazy. I have been living with this pain for 3 years now. In the beginning, it happened randomly, but this past year, it is happening all the time. MY good days are out numbered by my bad days now. Once I seem to get an attack, it doesn't go away for the day. Any movement can bring on another spasm. I am like you, I see the swelling in my chest. I can see it and then later, perhaps even a day or 2 later, the pain comes. A doctor gave me some muscle relaxers to numb it when it gets bad and it does help, but it is not a cure. There is no cure from what I read. NObody in my family has this. I am the lucky one. Yay for me huh? I have done acupuncture and it has helped some. I can afford to go 2 times a month, it is costly to go every week..even at 2 times a month it is $65 a session. The first treatment I was sore and it agravated my troubled chest, but after that, I was able to see some difference. The pain is still there, it is just lessoned. I don't know where to start? I dont know how to make a doctor believe this pain? IT hurts.. and I wish it didn't steal my life away... I am not the same person I used to be. I have 2 small children and most of the time I am in too much pain to play with them... I hope somebody reads this... anyhow...glad to know that I am not alone...

I too started in Oct.2009 and got a little better than in March 2010 it was back. I read serveral stories with about the same starting time. I find this sort of weird but yet no conclusion to this. My pain is along my sternum,1st and 2nd rib, i do get pain in my upper back and under my left arm pit. Most of the pain is towards the left, and pain is created when I roll from side to side in bed. And it the pain sometimes mimics heart pain. I am currently seeing a rheumatalogist and he gave me a six day steroid pak which helped but did not heal the problem. He also gave me Aleive. I want to know if it will ever go away, I have read several of these stories and it seems to go on forever! I am going to research the vitamin supplement turmeric which consist of curcumin. Has anybody taken this? It suppose to be a natural supplement to help with inflamation. I also try to eat the right foods as to avoid more inflamation.
I believe there has to be a resolution by using natural supplements, I am a strong believer of homeopathic remedies. Again I am curious if any of you have a visible swollen sternum? Because mine is. Any feedback would be helpful.

Hello

I would like to explain my story. I am mid thirty year male in good health
3 weeks ago I had to call ambulance at around midnight just before sleeping
as had a pulsating symptom feeling on the upper right side of chest. I felt
like was about to died and thinking it was a heart related condition. An impeding doom
feeling.
The cardiologist checked ECG,blood pressure and blood tests which were perfect and
stayed one night in hospital. The initial diagnosis was angina pectoris.
I took an echo and two stress test echos and results came up perfect,
and cardiologist told me there would be nearly 99% certainty not a cardiac
problem.

On the run up to the incident I had taken 4 short haul flights in the week,
and had busy work schedule on the friday evening 3 hours before the incident
I had workout at gym with weights, although did n ot do too much warm up. I
also do boxing training although not body to bodyhad a summer break for 1month.

Last night I had a similar pain in the right chest just before sleeping, got concerned but less so because not a cardiac issue but still same symptoms as before but did not pulsate.
I immediately went out and walked 10 minutes to hospital and they checked me, no ECG,blood pressure issues. then the intern pressed and felt pain there and she diagnosed tietze syndrome, chrondroosopathia costalis. She gave me some ibuprofen. The three days before had been swimming too for 30 minutes each

I will get this checked by muscoskeletal specialist later this week. I do get stress at work easily and felt the pain started leading to minipanic attack. After the incidence i have an overactive brain and need to calm this too.

Any insight, experience thoughts on this would be helpful. Has anyone been through some similar experiences like this too. Many thanks.

I was just diagnosed (well 3 wks ago) for tietze syndrome.. (I can't even say it... ) Not easy to explain w/o feeling like an idiot. I have had this pain for at least the past 5 yrs and I finally went to an internest that diagnosed me. I had been to a few drs. prior and the psychiatrist, of course, because I thought I was having panic attacks and anxiety issues, because the pain begins right by by heart,,,So I've been poping pills for years thinking I was causing all the pain and I had anxiety probs. I mean I do feel better, knowing I'm not crazy after all, so I stopped taking all my meds... Now, I know why I was taking them, I am in alot of pain, like, all of the time. I've finally got some relief from a pain pill, but it's really bad and cant do this everyday. Is ur pain bad..Mine is intnse...starts over my heart, goes into shoulder down the muscle into my arms, and even into my left hand. It also goes through to my back under the shoulder blade, where obv I cant even rub it.. OMG, I am glad Im not alone, and not mentally crazy, but c'mon....It's insane, intense.. PAIN, Thanks for reading. Never posted b4. Will the pain really go away, I had 2 cortisone inrctions 3 wks ago when they diagnosed me and actually, for once....new the pain could go away, even if it were only for a few hes :( I DONT EVEN KNOW WHO WILL SEE THIS... LET ME KNOW IF IM STILL ALONE... LOL (Hoping NOT)

Hi there...much of the learning about this syndrome seems to be from trial and error. I also have had spasms in the chest area...I was at a physical therapy appt. today which proved to be insightful. The spasm is called 'myoclonic ------', sorry I forget the term...but it usually happens when trying to rest or fall asleep, according to my PT. Your ribs extend all the way to your back, near your spine. I have had pain in my shoulder blades, neck, and shoulders as well. They have caused tension headaches too.

Breathing deeply causes the pain to intensify because your pulse and breathing rate are increasing, therefore your lungs are expanding more, which aggrevates the area. I've also had similar experiences while exercising. Actually, one doctor told me I had asthma because of this (which isn't the case).

I've been using topical analgesics (i.e., biofreeze) to tame the inflamation, as well as heat. The physical therapist gave me some myofascial massage which really relieved the pain a great deal. I also received some sort of electical therapy (where they put those sticky nodes on your chest). This was my first appointment, it seems to have helped some. I am to go back 2-3x weekly, so time will tell.

Good luck..........

When I am experiencing an attack, I was in a vicious cycle causing myself to further complicate the Tietze's by having anxiety/panic attacks. I was/still sometimes am hyperventilating, becoming dizzy and tingly in the arms/hands.
I've found it helpful when these panic symptoms start to remind myself that I've had tests done, and I don't have cancer or other serious life threatning problems. I 'talk' myself through it, and try to have someone with me to help remind me that I am ok, and it will pass.
Does anyone else seem to deal with the anxiety aspect of Tietze's? What relaxation/coping ideas work for anyone?

I am a 27 year old female, and was officially diagnosed with Tietze Syndrome 2 days ago by my PCP. I have been experiencing symptoms for several months now. My doctor even thought I had a touch of asthma based on my symptoms, prescribed me albuterol, which ended up to be a disaster making things worse.
I have good days and bad days as far as the pain and discomfort. My pain feels like a tight belt cinched around my chest, or like someone is sitting on me constantly. I get short of breath, and find it nearly impossible to find a comfortable position to rest in.
My pain radiates to my shoulders, neck, and back area. I have a slight bump on rib area just a bit below my colar bone. I feel like this pain is a prison, and sometimes do wonder if I am going crazy.
I ended up in the ER the end of June because of the tight, heavy, short of breath feelings. I ended up having a panic attack. I thought I was having a heart attack too. The doctors hooked me up to an EKG, did blood work, and gave me a chest x-ray....nothing. Diagnosed me with anxiety.
Went back to my PCP at least 5 more times. She prescribed me 800 mg Ibprofen, which honestly doesn't seem to help much. I'm now trying another anti-inflamatory called Diclofenac, generic for voltaren. I am scheduled for some physical therapy, and I am considering acupuncture.
What I don't get is how these symptoms come on without warning. It doesn't seem to matter what time of day, sometimes it's at bed time, other times while I'm driving or when I am working.
I am relieved to find this website, and to know that I am not suffering from an anxiety disorder, or just plain losing my mind.

I've been dx'd with costochondritis, but I have a hard bony mass on my left rib cage. I've had an XRAY and a CT Scan and they both came back normal, which I don't understand considering there is a big lump on my rib. I am not sure why it is not showing on the scans. Does anyone else have this? Maybe it is the inflamed cartilage?

My left ribs are constantly hurting and it seems to radiate around to the back and is also in my upper abdominal area. I also have pretty bad stabbing pains in my armpits- usually just the left one, but sometimes in the right.

I am a female and 34 years old. I was dx'd back in Jan and starting having pain in Oct 09.

I've had a CT Scan, XRAY, Abdominal U/S, U/S of both underarms, and tons of blood work. Most results came back normal- I was a tad anemic, but I am on iron pills and I was a tad hypothyroid and now taking 25 mcg of Synthroid. My sed rate was normal (6), which is weird b/c I thought with costo and Tietze it would be elevated.

I have been a coeliac (gluten free diet) for 5 years and I've had this pain in my chest for the last 3 years. I was diagnosed last week with Tietze Disease. So, the gluten free diet doesn't help at all. Lyn Taylor (Australia)

I´m from Brazil,,,At first my pain was exactly in the places described in several reports here,,, sternum and xiphoid process ... but one thing that no one commented and in my case is very strong, is that from the beginning I used to have much pain in the upper abdominal muscle and when I lay in back to sleep I already had spasms from upper to lower abdominal muscle,,, ever heard about this? Just to tell my story,,, after about three months going to several doctors and discovering even gastritis, I came to live with the pain,,,, which had diminished enough, but increasing back pain,,,, but whenever I return to running or do some small exercise, the pain returns. Today my pain is not so close to the sternum, but more distant in the ribs underneath, sometimes on one side, sometimes the other, and in the upper abdomen,,, sometimes burns, sometimes it's a stitch, sometimes itchy, ,,, some exams such as CT or MRI can diagnose Tietze? In two weeks I'll back the doctor,,,, pray for me .... by the way,,,, anybody here has cured? (my e-mail is vzrizzo@gmail.com to keep in contact) how?

over exerting the muscles in your chest will REALLY aggravate your condition. My name is darlene an i got the disorder when i was 26 yrs. old and also had acute costochondritis at the costo chondrotal junction. It's a fancy way to say that i was cracking the cartiledge over and over forcing the body to bind calcium deposits around the cracks till my right 5th rib at the breast bone had such a large lump it was stuck to my lung. I was a flexographic press operator when they came out with mylar stock. heavy lifting over a 4 yr. period deformed my right 5th and left 6th rib so bad i had to have them removed! 7 yr. later i went back to school and got my bachlor's in Construction Management. Through working i disabled myself even further. I am now totally disabled and too much physical exertion really aggravates my tietz's disorder. keep in mind that all your arm muscles are attached to your ribs so they will pull on these connective tissue. Muscle relaxers help alot but make me sleepy. I try to pace myself and a tens unit works WONDERS. if you place it on the back using the long tens strips (terminology?) the nerves that go to your ribs in the front generate off your spine hence the so craved pain relief! You can also use a product called "Biofreeze" which smells at 1st but the smell doesn't last long. LOL. It also has aloe in it which has it's own healing properties. CVS has it's own version called "Freeze It" that is alot cheaper but works the same. At almost 50 now i do my best to be careful of repetative motion stuff and heavy lifting as my condition gets aggrevated easily. You can get a tens unit from most medical supply places but they can be costly so ask your Dr. for a prescription and see if your health care provider covers it. good luck and I hope this helps.

I am headed down that road---I was told I strained my intercostal muscles and that my back is in spasm...I'm looking further into the situation because I just feel that there's something more. I'm in the NY [if you happen to be close to NY] area so if I find any specialists or docs around and they say something different, I'll give you their name.

I'm 18, going on 19 in 7 days, and last Monday I noticed that I had a terrible pain where the underwire is in my bra. I took it off only to be in excruciating pain for the rest of the night; I had also noticed a lump in my left breast which drove me to the doctors in the first place. My grandmother on my father's side a severe case of breast cancer so I wanted to be sure. The pain radiated all down my arm, underneath my arm, down my side to the end of my rib cage, up to my clavicle, to my scapula. It has not let up at all.

No on lymph nodes, no on cancer, no on fibrocystic breasts.

I was just diagnosed today with intercostal strain and back spasm, however, my left breast is still swollen, and the pain is starting to crawl over to the right side of my chest. It's painful to lay on my left side, and to basically move. I've had the CT scan and everything looks perfect; no tumors, no embolisms, nothing.

I had a blood test done and my thyroid levels are borderline [low]. I started feeling low about two weeks ago; there is nothing I could have done to strain those muscles. I'm exhausted, and suffering from insomnia and I just hurt all over. I do respect my doctor's diagnosis, but my body just feels as though there's something more.

Is Tietze's Syndrome a possibility that should be looked into or should I just stop and wait 6 weeks to see if my strain and spasm go away?

Ever been informed of the nerve block? Seems to be working for me. Just had the procedure completed 2 weeks ago and it really helped alleviate the pain. Went to University of Penn and saw a pain management specialist. They have deal with this before and were very knowledgeable. I believe it is called Intercostal Nerve Block or Sympathetic Nerve Block. Ask your doctor. Good luck.

I was in a ton of pain too (diagnosed with costochondritis) and I went to a see a pain management specialist at a well know university hospital. University of Penn. They did a nerve block on my T2 and T3 as a way to diagnose the nerves that were sending the pain messages to my brain. They were very effective and allowed me to do the rehab (with the help of a physical therapist) of the muscles in that area in my chest and back. The university doctors are very informed about tietze and similar costochodritis issues. Have you thought about the nerve block?
