My mom was diagnosed with Tietze's Syndrome many, many years ago. For the past 8 years or so I have had bouts of tenderness and pain directly to inside and slightly underneath my left breast, where the ribs meet the sternum, and if I press on the area it feels a bit swollen. I've seen doctors about this to rule out any breast disease issues (I haven't felt any lumps or anything), and it never occurred to me that it could be Tietze's. The pain gets worse sometimes around "that time of the month", I think because water retention in my breast causes pressure in that area. And if I do a lot of golfing the area can get really sore, too. I have not formally been diagnosed with Tietze's, but does anyone know if this can be hereditary? It would sure answer a lot of questions for me and put my mind at ease.
Is Tietze's hereditary?

The doc who diagnosed me with Tietze's said that it gets worse around "that time of the month" because of hormonal changes (he also said he didn't know why). I haven't read anything that said it can be hereditary. However, I do know it can be caused by a virus. It could be that your Mom and you caught the same virus: the symptoms do not have to show up at the same time--the virus could have laid dormant. Just a hypothesis!
